It is situated in the Acomayo Province, on the border of the districts Acomayo, Acos and Rondocan. Hatun Urqu lies south-west of the mountain Pisqu Urqu.〔 There is an intermittent stream south of Hatun Urqu named Saramayu (Quechua for "maize river", ''Saramayo'').
